The humble beginnings

Known to many as Orani Church, the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary is the parish church of the community and an important pilgrimage site. It is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Our Lady of the Rosary, whom locals honor as the Virgen Milagrosa, or the Miraculous Virgin.

Long before the present church stood tall, Orani Church began as a simple structure made of nipa leaves and bamboo, believed to have been built sometime in the 1600s. It later became an independent missionary center and parish on April 21, 1714, established by Dominican friars.

Through the years, the church faced many challenges. It underwent major repairs in 1792 and again in 1838. However, on September 16, 1852, a strong earthquake caused severe damage to the structure. Reconstruction followed from 1868 to 1891 under the leadership of Dominican priests Rev. Bartolomé Álvarez del Manzano and Rev. Fermín Pérez San Julián, who strengthened and improved the church.

Tragedy struck once more on March 16, 1938, when a fire destroyed much of Orani town, including the church. It was rebuilt in September of the same year. The present edifice now features a neoclassical façade with twin bell towers and enshrines the canonically crowned image of Our Lady of the Rosary, long believed to be miraculous and deeply connected to the town’s spiritual life.

On January 6, 1942, Japanese forces bombed Bataan, and the church suffered only minimal damage. During the Japanese Occupation, however, religious services were suspended because the church was used by Japanese troops as a garrison.

In a report by the town’s mayor at the time, Raymundo Galicia, it was noted that the image of the Virgin remained untouched. Throughout the entire occupation, the image stayed on its altar, undisturbed despite the presence of the soldiers inside the church.

After the war, the church slowly rose back to its feet. On August 15, 1945, it was first rehabilitated by Elias Calimbas. Years later, the construction was completed in 1982 through the efforts of Simplicio Fernandez and Emilano Santos.

From 1987 until October 6, 1991, the church underwent another major renovation under Antonio Dumaual and Camilo Pacanza. On October 6, 1991, the new altar was blessed by Bishop Celso N. Guevarra.

Further repairs and improvements were carried out in 2002, including work on both the church and the convent, continuing its long history of restoration and renewal.

A special addition to the convent was the Museo ng Mahal na Birheng Maria, a repository dedicated to Marian relics and artifacts. It houses the many vestments and crowns of the Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, carefully preserved as part of the church’s rich devotional heritage.

National recognition

The church was first elevated as a diocesan shrine on April 18, 1986, under the Diocese of Balanga. Later, on August 22, 2004, it was proclaimed a “Dambana ng Paglalakbay” (Pilgrim Shrine) by the Bishop of Balanga, highlighting its importance as a major pilgrimage destination.

Its significance continued to grow when Pope Francis declared it a minor basilica on September 5, 2019. This recognition affirmed its strong role in promoting Marian devotion and its inclusion as one of the Jubilee churches during the 500th anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines in 2021.

The church is also recognized as an active heritage site by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, with a Level II historical marker installed in 1939 to honor its cultural and religious importance.

At present, the rector and parish priest is Rev. Fr. Antonio M. Quintos, Jr., who was appointed on June 5, 2023, and the Minor Basilica and Shrine-Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary of Orani continues to serve as an active parish for the Catholic faithful in the municipality of Orani, Bataan. It is under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Balanga and is part of the Vicariate of St. Dominic de Guzman.
